Overview

CellShip® is a sterile, xeno-free, chemically defined medium for transporting and storing mammalian cells at ambient temperature. It is an alternative to shipping cryopreserved cells on dry ice. It contains a non-toxic additive that protects cells from shear stress and helps maintain membrane integrity.

Key benefits

  • Ready to use for a wide range of cells, with minimal cell handling, which lowers contamination risk
  • Adds flexibility to time-critical processes
  • Removes the cost and logistics of dry-ice shipping
  • Holds pH between 7.20 and 7.45 from +2 °C to +37 °C
  • Xeno-free, serum-free and DMSO-free: no animal or human proteins
  • Endotoxin ≤ 1.0 EU/mL, in line with EU standards
  • Manufactured under ISO 13485

Quality and regulatory status

Standard CellShip formats are registered as a medical device with the MHRA and are UKCA and CE marked. Versions with antibiotics or other additives are not UKCA/CE marked. Each batch is tested for pH, osmolality, sterility and conductivity (by standard EP/USP methods), endotoxin and in-house functionality.

Each shipment comes with a Certificate of Analysis, a Safety Data Sheet, a product information sheet and a shipping declaration of conformity.

Data

Validated cell lines

CellShip has been validated for up to 120 hours at ambient temperature with the cell lines below. It has also been validated for 72 hours with primary canine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

Cell line Typical use Storage Viability at recovery Fold change after recovery
Jurkat T-cell model for CAR-T development 72 h / 120 h 87% / 81% 2.1 / 1.4
HEK-293 Biomanufacturing 72 h / 120 h 98% / 98% 4.5 / 2.3
HepG2 Drug development, toxicity testing 72 h / 120 h 96% / 98% 2.9 / 3.7
CHO Biomanufacturing 72 h / 120 h 97% / 96% 6.5 / 5.0
K562 Research, cytotoxicity assays 72 h 98% 4.5
A549 Drug metabolism, toxicity 120 h 97% 2.2
HeLa Biomedical and vaccine research 72 h 81% 1.9

Work is under way on more primary cells and on stably transfected and gene-silenced cell lines.

CellShip compared with cryopreservation

Jurkat cells. Cells were stored for 72 hours in CellShip at ambient temperature or on dry ice after cryopreservation. CellShip cells were back to pre-transport numbers within 24 hours of recovery, had doubled by 48 hours, and viability stayed high throughout.

HepG2 cells. After 48 hours of recovery, CellShip-transported cells were fully adherent with typical growth morphology. Cryopreserved cells had started to adhere but had not yet regained normal morphology.

Primary canine MSCs. Adipose-derived MSCs from four donor animals were compared with cryopreserved controls stored at -80 °C. MSCs stored in CellShip for 72 hours:

  • adhered and began proliferating sooner
  • had higher viability, with fewer apoptotic and necrotic cells
  • had the same or slightly higher metabolic activity
  • kept the same CD marker expression
  • kept their ability to differentiate into bone, cartilage and fat cells

FAQs

How long can cells be stored in CellShip?

CellShip has been validated for up to 120 hours at ambient temperature across a range of cell lines, and for 72 hours with primary canine MSCs.

Why choose CellShip over dry-ice shipping?

It removes the cost and logistics of shipping on dry ice. It is ready to use with minimal cell handling, which lowers contamination risk. It holds pH between 7.20 and 7.45 from +2 °C to +37 °C, and it is xeno-free and DMSO-free.

How do I use CellShip?

  1. Culture cells using your standard growth media and conditions.
  2. Harvest the cells and centrifuge at 180 × g for 5 minutes at room temperature. Discard the supernatant.
  3. Resuspend the cells in 2–3 mL of CellShip, centrifuge again and discard the supernatant.
  4. Resuspend the cells in 2 mL of CellShip and transfer them to a 2 mL cryotube.
  5. For transport, lay the cryotubes horizontally in protective packaging.
  6. On arrival, resuspend the cells and transfer them to complete growth medium. Culture for 24–48 hours. You don’t need to remove the CellShip first.

What cell concentrations can I use?

Cell concentrations from below 1 × 10⁶ to above 10 × 10⁶ cells/mL have been tested successfully.

How should CellShip be stored and shipped?

Store at +2 to +8 °C and protect from light. Shelf life is 10 months from manufacture. CellShip ships at ambient temperature.

What documentation comes with each shipment?

A Certificate of Analysis, a Safety Data Sheet, a product information sheet and a shipping declaration of conformity.

Can I get a sample?

Yes. Sample batches are available on request. Email sales@lifesciencegroup.co.uk or call +44 1234 889180.
